Hand hooked rugs have delighted generations with their
gorgeous patterns and intricate detailing. Originally a popular pastime with
homemakers in the 1800's, crochet hooks were used to pull scraps of wool through
a backing of sturdy burlap. Floral designs and geometrics were very popular,
and the more industrious women copied popular Persian patterns of the day.
Fortunately,
the art of hand hooking rugs is still alive today. We carry a large selection
of 100% wool hand hooked rugs in a variety of sizes from 2'x3' through 12'xl5'.
Also, hook rug runners and chair pads are very popular. Custom sizes are available
in several of our hook rugs. There are aubussons, florals, Victorian Style
and Colonial patterns. Scatter rugs, runners and chair pads too!
Colors available range from ivory and black through reds, blues, greens and
more. Pastels and primary colors, casual to formal, there's something
for every room in your home!
ALL HOOKED RUGS - HANDMADE!
Hooked
rugs are made in several qualities to achieve different effects. Using
a thick wool yarn necessitates larger "hooks" or loops, adding thickness to
the rug but giving a more rustic, less detailed look. To make finer patterns,
thinner wool yarns are used to make tiny hooks. The smaller the hook,
the more hooks are needed to create a rug. This creates a dense wool surface,
which is very durable and produces an exceptionally detailed design. The
finest hook rugs are referred to as "petit-points". They possess the look
of a fine needlepoint rug, but retain the durability of a hooked rug.
The finishing touch to any quality hooked rug is a latex backing, which adds
body to the rug and holds the loops securely.
